About Glowing Oceans
Glowing Oceans is an immersive indoor experience where visitors can walk through glowing lagoons, explore interactive touch pools, and discover the beauty of bioluminescent plankton. With sensory tiles that light up as you move and educational activities that explore the science behind bioluminescence, it’s a magical journey that connects you with the wonders of the ocean’s ecosystems.
Glowing Oceans is the first of its kind, focusing entirely on the tiny, glowing superstars of the ocean—bioluminescent plankton! Traditional aquariums tend to roll out the red carpet for the big guys like sharks and whales, but they often miss out on showcasing the magic of bioluminescence. We spotted this gap (as rare in aquariums as seeing bioluminescence in nature!) and used our expertise in growing glowing plankton to create an immersive experience where you can literally step into the light. Hey, Traditional Aquariums: Want in on the glow? Call us about our traveling exhibit!
Plankton play a vital role in marine ecosystems. These tiny organisms produce more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe and help sequester large amounts of CO2, making them essential to life on Earth. At Glowing Oceans, you’ll learn about their incredible contributions to our planet's health.
The plankton in Glowing Oceans are completely non-toxic and safe to interact with. While some types of dinoflagellates are responsible for harmful algal blooms, commonly known as red tides, the species we showcase here are harmless. The exhibit has been thoughtfully designed to ensure the safety of both visitors and the plankton. We invite you to step in and enjoy the glow!
Glowing Oceans promotes ocean conservation through sustainable practices like growing plankton in closed-loop aquaculture systems. A portion of the proceeds from the entry fees supports marine conservation initiatives aimed at protecting fragile ecosystems and advancing ocean health.
No, the plankton used in Glowing Oceans are not harmed by the experience. The exhibit is carefully designed to maintain the health and sustainability of the bioluminescent organisms while allowing visitors to interact with this extraordinary natural phenomenon.
